Computer Systems Technology - Security

Picture yourself as the technician who designs a company’s network, secures its cloud and keeps attackers out. Cambrian College’s Computer Systems Technology - Security programme is a three-year Ontario College Advanced Diploma in six semesters at the Barrydowne campus in Sudbury. It builds in-depth technical and customer service skills for cloud infrastructure, wireless access and network security.

Year one starts with Introduction to Networking, Windows Client for IT Professionals, IT Essentials and Introduction to Programming, then PowerShell, Switching, Routing, and Wireless Essentials, Linux System Administration, Microsoft Azure Fundamentals, Relational Databases and Technical Math and Subnetting. Year two moves to Administrating Windows Server Hybrid Core Infrastructure, Enterprise Networks, Security, and Automation, REST API integration with Python, Advanced Linux Administration, Identity and Access Admin, Microsoft 365 Endpoint Admin and Cybersecurity Operations. The final year covers Enterprise Core, Firewall Essentials, Automating the Cloud, Info Protection & Compliance, Azure Security Technologies and Risk Management and Mitigation.

Cambrian is an authorised Cisco Systems Networking Academy, Red Hat Academy and Microsoft IT Academy, so CSTY course content lines up with the industry certifications graduates can pursue. You work with tools such as Packet Tracer, Tera Term, Putty and Kiwi Syslog Server, and Cambrian students regularly win medals at the annual Skills Ontario Competition. Semester six includes a seven-week Field Placement; past hosts include Technica Mining, Vianet and Spectrum Telecom Group Ltd. Graduates can continue into Cambrian’s Cybersecurity, IT Business Analysis or Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning graduate certificates.

Graduates work as network administrators, system administrators, network designers, network installers, product support technicians and network security specialists in schools, government, hospitals, retail and industry. The programme suits hands-on learners who want three years of networking, Microsoft cloud and security depth, finished with a real placement.
