Electrical Engineering Technology - Industrial

From the hoists in a Sudbury nickel mine to the motor drives on a factory line, industry runs on electrical systems that someone must design, wire and troubleshoot. Electrical Engineering Technology - Industrial is a three-year Ontario College Advanced Diploma, taught over six semesters at Cambrian College, that prepares you to be that person.

Year one builds foundations with Electrical Fundamentals 1, Electrical Installation I and II, Prints & Electrical Code I and II, Electrical Workplace Safety, Motor Control Fundamentals, Digital Electronics Theory 1 and Electrical Math I and II. Year two covers Electrical Systems Lab 1 and Electrical Systems Theory, Power Electronics I and II, Instrumentation I, AC and DC Machines Lab 1 and Theory, PLC Basic Programming 1 and Alternative Energy. In year three you move on to Intermediate PLC, Industrial Wiring Practices 1, Electronic Drives 1, Electrical Networking, PLC Projects & Troubleshooting 1, Electrical Protection & Dist., Electrical Systems Monitoring, Fundamental Hydraulics 1 and Instrumentation II 1, finishing with a technical report.

Lab work uses programmable logic controllers, instrumentation, industry-standard 120 to 208/600-volt equipment and a full range of hand tools, power tools and electrical test equipment. An optional paid co-op lets you apply your skills with employers; past partners include Vale and Linamar Corporation. The diploma equates to two levels of the Construction and Maintenance Electrician apprenticeship and all three levels of the Industrial Electrician apprenticeship, and Cambrian’s college and university agreements may give credit for further study.

Graduates work as electrical engineering technologists in design roles, apprentice industrial or construction electricians, instrumentation and PLC technicians, renewable energy technicians, power distribution specialists and fire and security alarm technicians. The programme suits methodical, safety-conscious learners who enjoy maths and want hands-on work with motors, controls and automation.
