Program overview
Every bracket, shaft and gearbox begins as a drawing and a page of calculations. Cambrian College’s Mechanical Engineering Technician is a two-year Ontario College Diploma of four semesters, taught at the Barrydowne campus in Sudbury, that trains you to design, model, test and specify mechanical components and the systems they belong to.
Semester one covers Engineering Graphics, Physical Principles I, Electrical Fundamentals, Engineering Materials, Introduction to Metrology and Geometric Dimensioning and Algebra I. In semester two you move on to Solid Modeling, Mechanical Lab I, Industrial Design I, Fluid Mechanics, Physical Principles II and Algebra II. Semester three builds engineering analysis through Dynamics of Machines, Strength of Materials, Industrial Design II, Technical Math III and Applied Calculus, and semester four brings Advanced Solid Modelling, Advanced Structural Design, Materials and Processes, Codes and Standards, Instrumentation I and Thermodynamics.
Cambrian teaches the design side through AutoCAD and SolidWorks, and you turn models into parts using 3D printing and CNC machining in the programme’s labs. Real-world community and applied research projects give you practice solving mechanical problems for actual partners, and experiential learning is built in through capstone or project work. Graduates may be eligible to register as a Certified Technician (C.Tech) with OACETT, and can continue into Cambrian’s Mechanical Engineering Technology programme. A Windows 11 laptop with a dedicated graphics card and 16 GB of RAM is required to run the design software.
Graduates work as mechanical engineering technicians, design and drafting technicians, quality control inspectors, maintenance planners, production technicians and technical sales representatives for manufacturers, fabrication shops, mines and engineering consultancies. The programme suits students who are strong in maths and physics, enjoy seeing a 3D model become a physical part, and want a two-year route into mechanical design.

Admission requirements:
- Education: Grade 12 with English and Grade 12 Maths, minimum 50%.
- English: IELTS 6.0 (no band below 5.5), TOEFL iBT 80, PTE 58 or Duolingo 105.
- PGWP: Yes (CIP 15.0805), up to 3 years. Needs CLB 5.
- Before you apply: CAD 95 application fee. Ontario PAL required. Visa refused? Full refund less CAD 250 if you send the refusal within 10 business days.
