Program overview
If you enjoy taking machines apart to see how they work, imagine designing the next one yourself. Mechanical Engineering Technology is a three-year Ontario College Advanced Diploma, delivered over six semesters at Cambrian College in Sudbury, that develops the design, analysis and manufacturing skills behind mining equipment, industrial machinery and consumer products.
Year one covers Engineering Graphics, Electrical Fundamentals, Introduction to Metrology and Geometric Dimensioning, Engineering Materials, Physical Principles I and II, Algebra I and II, Solid Modeling 1, Mechanical Lab I, Industrial Design I and Fluid Mechanics. Year two brings Dynamics of Machines, Strength of Materials, Industrial Design II, Applied Calculus, Advanced Solid Modelling, Instrumentation I, Thermodynamics, Advanced Structural Design, Materials and Processes and Codes and Standards. Year three deepens this with Advanced Dynamics, Engineering Operations Management, Advanced Calculus, Machine Design, Applied Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer, Advanced Strength of Materials and Metrology and Quality Control.
Students design in AutoCAD and SolidWorks and explore 3D printing and CNC machining processes in Cambrian’s labs, working on real community and applied research projects. The first two years are shared with Cambrian’s Mechanical Engineering Technician programme, and year three uses a virtual curriculum shared with students from across northern Ontario. Research Project I and Research Project II round out your technical writing and presentation skills, and graduates have the option to study at university for as little as one more year to earn a Bachelor of Engineering degree.
Graduates work as mechanical engineering technologists, design technologists, drafting and 3D modelling technologists, quality control technologists, maintenance planners and manufacturing technologists. The programme suits analytical problem-solvers who are comfortable with calculus and physics and want to move from sketch to solid model to machined part.
What it costs per year · indicative
