Motive Power Technician - Service and Management (Automotive) is a two-year Ontario College Diploma at Cambrian College in Sudbury, split evenly across four semesters between the automotive shop and the classroom.
Semester one starts with Steering/Suspension/Brakes I, Drive Train Systems I and Trades Practice & App I. Semester two adds Electrical & Electronics I, Gas Engines I and Basic Fuel System & Fuel Manag. In semester three you study Repairer’s Rights and Responsibilities, Electrical Systems & Electronics, Gas Engines II, Power Train Controls II and Workplace Communication. The final semester covers Drive Train System II, Electronic Fuel Injection Systems, Steering/Suspension/ABS Brakes, Air Conditioning Systems and Personal Relations Skill & Attitude, so you finish able to diagnose modern engine management, chassis and climate systems as well as advise customers.
Half of your time in the programme is spent in Cambrian’s automotive shop, working on vehicles alongside classroom theory. The diploma equates to three levels of required theory towards the automotive service technician Certificate of Qualification, which shortens the in-school part of your apprenticeship. An optional paid co-op connected directly to the programme is available, supported by Career Centre sessions on industry-specific resumes and interviews. The service and management focus, including Repairer’s Rights and Responsibilities and Personal Relations Skill & Attitude, prepares you for front-counter roles as well as the service bay.
Graduates work as general automotive service technicians, electrical and driveability specialists, transmission technicians, service advisors, parts and retail salespersons, and in manufacturing and custom fabrication. The programme suits mechanically minded people who like diagnostic problem-solving and want a clear route into an automotive apprenticeship.

Admission requirements
Admission requirements:
- Education: Grade 12 with English and Grade 11 Maths, minimum 50%.
- English: IELTS 6.0 (no band below 5.5), TOEFL iBT 80, PTE 58 or Duolingo 105.
- PGWP: Not PGWP eligible.
- Before you apply: CAD 95 application fee. Ontario PAL required. Visa refused? Full refund less CAD 250 if you send the refusal within 10 business days.
