Programs and what CBU is known for
Sixty seven programs are open to international students, and they fall into five recognisable groups.
- Business: the Bachelor of Business Administration with concentrations in accounting, marketing and supply chain management, plus a general route with optional co-op. The Community Studies degrees explained
This is the part of CBU that almost no agent explains properly, and it is the most distinctive thing the university offers.
The Bachelor of Arts Community Studies joins an academic major to community based learning, a supervised field placement and a practical service component. Graduates leave with documented community work attached to their subject knowledge rather than a transcript alone. Fourteen majors are available within the structure, including psychology, English, history, political science, mathematics, Mi’kmaq studies, music, applied theatre, communication, folklore, philosophy, sociology and sport and physical activity leadership.

A Community Studies graduate points at a placement, a delivered project and a named supervisor instead. In the community, non profit, settlement services and municipal sector across Atlantic Canada, that is the difference between a shortlist and a rejection.
Two pairings are worth flagging as unusually strong. Community Studies with mathematics produces someone who can measure whether a programme works, and community organisations are desperate for that skill because funders now demand evidence of outcomes. Community Studies with psychology produces documented supervised hours with real populations, which is precisely what graduate psychology admissions panels look for and what most undergraduate applicants lack entirely.
Engineering: two very different routes
CBU offers two engineering pathways that sound similar and are not. Choosing wrongly is expensive, so read this carefully.
Engineering Technology degrees
These are complete degrees awarded by CBU in electronics and controls, petroleum, chemical, environmental studies and mechanical engineering technology. They sit between a trade qualification and a professional engineering degree, and Canadian industry hires technologists in volume because they arrive able to work with equipment rather than only to calculate. Post degree and post diploma versions let existing graduates and diploma holders reach the same award in two or three years.
Crucially, these are degrees, which means they carry full post study work standing.
Engineering transfer diplomas
CBU also delivers the first two years of a four year Bachelor of Engineering across six disciplines: civil, chemical, environmental, industrial, mechanical and materials. Years three and four are completed at Dalhousie University in Halifax, which awards the engineering degree.
This is where students get caught. The CBU stage is a two year university diploma, not a degree, and the qualifying credential finishes at a different institution. That has real consequences for study permits, for the transition between institutions and for post study work standing. It is an excellent academic route into professional engineering and a poor route for anyone whose plan depends on working in Canada immediately after two years in Sydney.

The flat undergraduate rate is genuinely useful. At most Canadian universities a business degree costs more than an arts degree and engineering costs more than both, which pushes students toward programs on price rather than fit. Here, with a handful of clearly marked exceptions, the subject you choose does not change what you pay. Choose the programme you will actually finish.

One exception matters. The Master of Healthcare Leadership and Innovation requires IELTS 7.0 with no band below 6.5, and accepts IELTS only. TOEFL, PTE and Duolingo are not accepted for that programme. Applicants targeting it should book IELTS before doing anything else.
Note also that there is no waiver route here. A medium of instruction letter will not substitute for a test score, so build test preparation into your timeline from the start.

Not every programme runs in every intake. The mechanical engineering technology routes and the three sixteen month master degrees are September entry only, while most arts, science and Community Studies programs offer all three windows.

Post study work: which programs qualify
This is the most consequential section on the page, and it separates CBU’s programs into two groups.
The 59 degree programs
Every bachelor degree and every master degree at CBU is a degree level credential. The six engineering diplomas and the nutrition pathway all finish the qualifying credential at another institution, so the two years at Sydney do not by themselves produce a completed award. None of that makes these bad programs. The engineering transfer route is a legitimate and well established path into professional engineering. Spouse work permit: the master degree advantage
For married applicants this decides everything, and the rule is simple.

Run the arithmetic before dismissing the master degrees as expensive. A CAD 25,328 sixteen month master with a spouse legally working in Canada is a very different household proposition from a CAD 18,090 undergraduate degree with no second income for four years. The honest part: housing and part time work
Most pages about CBU will not tell you this. You should know it before you commit.
International enrolment at CBU grew extraordinarily fast, taking the student body to around 9,100 at its peak in a city of roughly 30,000 people, with a large majority of those students coming from outside Canada. A small city could not absorb that pace. Housing became scarce and expensive relative to local norms, part time jobs became heavily competed for, and the university had to use off campus space to hold classes.
The university responded with a plan to stabilise and reduce enrolment toward roughly 7,000, alongside investment in new residence capacity. That correction is genuinely underway and conditions are easing, but the underlying constraint has not disappeared.
What this means for you, practically:
- Arrange accommodation before you fly. Do not arrive expecting to find a room in the first week. This is the single most common problem we see with Sydney arrivals.
- Do not budget on part time earnings. Jobs exist, but the competition among students is real and the local wage ceiling is lower than in a big city. Your funding plan should stand without them.
- Expect a small city, not a metropolis. Sydney has a modest South Asian community and limited public transport. Students who want the scale and diaspora networks of Toronto or Brampton will find it a difficult adjustment.
- Winter is serious. Cape Breton Island gets heavy snow and long cold. Budget CAD 300 to 500 for proper clothing before arrival.
