Program overview

The Bachelor of Design in Visual Communication is a four-year studio degree with a practicum, aimed at students who want the strategic and research side of design rather than software training alone.

The studio sequence runs typography and typographic systems, colour and composition, brand identity and visual systems, editorial and publication design, packaging, information design and data visualisation, user interface and user experience design, motion graphics, and design research and strategy. Technical coursework covers the Adobe suite, prototyping tools and production-ready file preparation. Studio critique is continuous, and the practicum places students with agencies or in-house teams before graduation.

What separates a design degree from a design diploma is the research and strategy component — being able to justify a design decision against a brief, an audience and a business objective, not just execute it. That capability is what moves designers from production roles into art direction, and it is the explicit target of the upper years here.

CapU is a fully public teaching university on Vancouver’s North Shore — a Designated Learning Institution (DLI O19280078102) with university status since 2008. Classes are small, faculty teach rather than delegate to assistants, and tuition sits well below the big Vancouver research universities while the credential carries the same public-institution standing.

Its field maps to CIP 50.0409 (Graphic design). As a bachelor’s degree, graduates are exempt from the November 2024 PGWP field-of-study restriction and may qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit of up to three years. Full-time on-campus study and graduation remain the conditions, and final decisions rest with IRCC.
