Bachelor of Science - General

The Bachelor of Science - General is a four-year degree built for breadth across the natural sciences rather than early specialisation into one discipline.

Students take foundational sequences in biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics, then build upper-year concentrations from cell and molecular biology, organic and analytical chemistry, ecology and evolution, genetics, microbiology, calculus and linear algebra, statistics and data analysis, and laboratory methods. Laboratory work is continuous and hands-on — at CapU’s class sizes students run experiments themselves rather than watching a demonstrator, which is the single biggest practical difference from a large first-year science cohort elsewhere.

The general structure suits two groups: students who want a science degree without committing to a specialism at eighteen, and students planning to transfer into a specialised or professional program with a strong Canadian GPA behind them. Quantitative and laboratory competence is the transferable core in both cases.

CapU is a fully public teaching university on Vancouver’s North Shore — a Designated Learning Institution (DLI O19280078102) with university status since 2008. Classes are small, faculty teach rather than delegate to assistants, and tuition sits well below the big Vancouver research universities while the credential carries the same public-institution standing.

Its field maps to CIP 30.0101 (Biological and physical sciences). As a bachelor’s degree, graduates are exempt from the November 2024 PGWP field-of-study restriction and may qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit of up to three years. Full-time on-campus study and graduation remain the conditions, and final decisions rest with IRCC.
