Program overview
The University Diploma in 3D Animation for Film and Games is a two-year production program covering the full computer-generated pipeline. At $39,491 a year it is the most expensive program in CapU’s catalogue, which reflects the software licensing, render infrastructure and small studio cohorts it runs on.
The pipeline sequence covers 3D modelling and digital sculpting in Maya and ZBrush, UV mapping, texturing and physically based materials, rigging and character setup, keyframe and motion-capture animation, simulation and dynamics for cloth, hair and effects, lighting and rendering, compositing, and real-time asset preparation for game engines. Students work under studio-style deadlines and finish with a demo reel built to industry review standards.
The film-and-games dual targeting is a deliberate hedge. Offline rendering for film and real-time rendering for games are diverging technically, and graduates trained in only one are locked out of half the market. Vancouver happens to host major employers in both, so the flexibility is directly usable rather than theoretical.
CapU is a fully public teaching university on Vancouver’s North Shore — a Designated Learning Institution (DLI O19280078102) with university status since 2008. Classes are small, faculty teach rather than delegate to assistants, and tuition sits well below the big Vancouver research universities while the credential carries the same public-institution standing.
Its field maps to CIP 50.0411 (Animation, interactive technology and video graphics). Important: this is a non-degree credential, so unlike CapU’s bachelor’s programs it is not exempt from the November 2024 PGWP field-of-study restriction — eligibility depends on this CIP field appearing on IRCC’s current eligible list at the time you apply. Confirm the live list with an Apply Study Visa counsellor before committing. Final decisions rest with IRCC.

Admission requirements
Who can apply (guide for international students):
- Education: Completed Class 12 (10+2) with 60% or higher from a recognised board.

- IELTS: Overall 6.5, no band below 6.0
- TOEFL iBT: Total 83
- PTE Academic: Overall 56
- Duolingo: 125
- GRE/GMAT: Not required.
Application fee $135 CAD. CapU assesses on documents with no interview for most programs, but international seats in the popular studio and health intakes fill months ahead — apply early rather than to the posted deadline. Career opportunities
The 3D pipeline splits into specialist roles, and studios hire by specialism:
- 3D Modeller — characters, props and environments
- Character / Creature Rigger — a chronically short-staffed specialism
- 3D Animator — film, series and game cinematics
- Lighting and Look Development Artist — the visual quality tier
- Technical Artist — the pipeline role with the best pay progression
- FX Artist — simulation and effects work
- Real-Time Artist — game engine production
Non-degree credential — verify current PGWP field-of-study eligibility before applying.
