Arts and Social Sciences: International Year One (Integrated Entry)

Want to study politics, psychology or economics at a Canadian research university while your academic English is still catching up? Fraser International College (FIC) offers the International Year One in Arts and Social Sciences, Integrated Entry, with classes held in FIC’s building on SFU’s Burnaby campus. Integrated Entry is planned as a three-term programme, which works out to roughly a calendar year of study.

Your opening term pairs INTG100, an integrated English support course, with just two academic courses, so language practice happens right beside real university content rather than before it. Over the following terms you complete a full first-year programme: one writing course chosen from options like ENGL115 Literature and Culture or ENGL113 Literature and Performance, one quantitative course, and electives drawn from criminology, linguistics, history, sociology and other arts subjects.

Each course is designed by SFU and taught by an instructor the university has approved, so your grades count toward the SFU record you carry forward. When you have completed 10 courses worth at least 30 units and hold a cumulative GPA of 2.50, you are guaranteed admission to the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences for your second year. Co-op work terms can then be added through SFU’s co-operative education programme.

An SFU arts degree leads to roles such as policy analyst, communications officer, research assistant, journalist, human resources coordinator and community programme officer. This route suits students whose English level sits close to the direct standard but not quite on it, and who prefer to strengthen their English inside the degree pathway instead of spending a separate term on language study.
