Business Administration: International Year One (ELC Pathway Entry)

Every business career begins with clear communication. With ELC Entry, you first complete the English Language Course stage, a full-time, 16-week programme, and then progress to the Business Administration year of International Year One (UTP Stage II), taught at FIC and located on SFU’s Burnaby campus. The business year itself then takes three terms, so the whole journey covers roughly sixteen months.

The English stage focuses on conversation, interaction and authentic materials, and during it you sit the FIC language assessment to confirm you are ready. Once in UTP Stage II, you study BUS200 Business Fundamentals, BUS216 on business communication, ECON103 and ECON105 in economics, MATH151 or MATH157 in calculus, and electives drawn from an extensive approved list. You also choose one writing course, such as ENGL112 or WL101, which builds on the skills gained during the language stage.

FIC courses mirror SFU’s own first year because SFU designs them and approves the teaching staff. Your target after ten courses is a 3.2 CGPA with at least C- in required subjects, which guarantees progression into the Bachelor of Business Administration at second-year level. Between 2.67 and 3.19, a broad-based Beedie application remains possible. The degree includes an optional co-op programme through the Beedie School of Business.

Later, graduates may work as junior financial analysts, digital marketing coordinators, client relationship officers, procurement assistants, business development associates or HR generalists. ELC Entry suits students whose English is still below the level FIC requires and who want structured language training before any credit coursework starts. It removes the pressure of learning English and economics at the same moment.
