Program overview

Marketing, media and management come together in a single first year. Direct Entry to FIC’s Communication and Business year starts you on credit courses at FIC from your first term, next to Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, and the programme takes three terms, one year.

Core courses are BUS200, CMNS110, CMNS120 Creativity and Communication Across Media, CMNS130 and IAT102 Graphic Design, with a choice of IAT100 or IAT110. Four electives round out the year, and FIC recommends options such as BUS251 Financial Accounting I, BUS216, ECON103 and ENGL115 Literature and Culture. At the start, direct entrants take ILS101 alongside ALC101, the non-credit Academic Literacy Course, unless they hold an exemption. FIC frames the goal as developing human resource and marketing know-how while learning to generate effective social media engagement.

The courses mirror SFU’s first year because SFU designs them and approves the people who teach them. FIC students also study in Bennett Library and use SFU Recreation. With ten courses completed, 30 or more units, grades of C- or better and a GPA of at least 2.50, you move into second year of the SFU Bachelor of Arts offered by FCAT, pairing communication and Beedie business minors. SFU co-op is an option throughout the degree. Placements can help you decide between agency, corporate and community settings.

Typical graduate roles include advertising executive, marketing specialist, public relations officer, human resources coordinator, social media strategist and arts and culture administrator. Direct Entry suits students who already meet the full English requirement and want the most direct path to an SFU degree mixing communication and business.
