Program overview
Brands live or fade on how well they communicate. International Year One in Communication and Business at FIC, studied on the SFU Burnaby campus through Integrated Entry, lets you build marketing and media skills while your academic English grows. The route takes three terms, about one year, in total.
The Integrated first term combines INTG100 Academic English, which works on academic reading, persuasive essays and speaking in groups, with ILS101 and two credit courses. Over the year you complete BUS200 Business Fundamentals, CMNS120 Creativity and Communication Across Media, IAT102 and either IAT100 Digital Image Design or IAT110 Visual Communication Design, plus recommended electives like BUS216 Introduction to Essentials of Business Communications and ECON105 Principles of Macroeconomics. Across the year you build business skills in marketing, accounting and international business, and learn how key messaging and advertising reach an audience.
All courses are designed by SFU, and instructors hold SFU approval, so credits transfer cleanly. The key target is a 2.50 GPA on ten courses, at least 30 units, and a C- or higher throughout; meeting it moves you into second year of an SFU Bachelor of Arts through FCAT, combining a communication minor with a Beedie business minor. Co-op education at SFU can add work terms to your degree. While at FIC you can also book study space in Bennett Library and join SFU Recreation programmes.
Possible careers include social media specialist, marketing coordinator, human resources coordinator, event planner, community relations officer and advertising account coordinator. Integrated Entry is aimed at students whose English is slightly below the direct entry level and who prefer to start credit courses right away with language support built in.
