Program overview
Design, media and digital culture meet in one first year. Choosing Direct Entry for FIC’s Communication, Art and Technology year places you in credit courses from your first term at FIC, beside Simon Fraser University in Burnaby. The programme runs for three terms, which is one calendar year, before you move into second year at SFU.
Required courses for the Communication path include CMNS110 Introduction to Communication Studies, CMNS120, CMNS130 and IAT102 Graphic Design. If Interactive Arts and Technology is your aim, IAT100 Digital Image Design sits beside a writing course such as WL101 Writing in World Literature and a quantitative course like MATH157 Calculus I for the Social Sciences. Breadth electives range from CA135 Introduction to Cinema to PSYC100 Introduction to Psychology I. As a direct entrant, you also complete ILS101 and the non-credit ALC101 Academic Literacy Course early on, unless exempted.
Courses are built by SFU and taught by instructors the university has approved, and you study in the same setting as SFU students, using Bennett Library and campus recreation. Once you have completed ten courses with a C- or better, a CGPA of 2.50 leads into the School of Communication or FCAT double minors; Interactive Arts and Technology requires 2.60. At SFU, both schools offer co-op education.
Typical roles after graduation include graphic designer, UX/UI designer, public relations specialist, journalist, animator and web developer. This entry type is right for applicants whose English already satisfies the full requirement and who want the quickest route into an SFU creative or communication degree. Co-op terms at SFU can help you test these directions before you graduate.
