Communication, Art and Technology: International Year One (ELC Pathway Entry)

Sure that media and design are your future, but want firmer English before university study? The ELC Entry route into FIC’s first-year Communication, Art and Technology stream opens with study in SFU’s English Language and Culture (ELC) programme and then moves to FIC on the Burnaby campus. Expect about sixteen weeks of English first, followed by three FIC terms.

The ELC-FIC Pathway Program is full-time and runs for sixteen weeks, mixing group conversation, everyday English, writing assignments and critical thinking work, and you sit the FIC Language Assessment Test to confirm you are ready to progress. The academic year that follows introduces communication theory through CMNS110 and CMNS130, visual practice through IAT110 and IAT102, and optional breadth courses such as CA149 Sound or LING111 The Wonder of Words.

At FIC, the courses are SFU-designed and delivered by SFU-approved instructors, so students meet university-level expectations from the first day of the academic stage. To enter second year you need ten academic courses and a CGPA of 2.50 for Communication or 2.60 for Interactive Arts and Technology. SFU options are a Bachelor of Arts in Communication, a BA or BSc in Interactive Arts and Technology, or FCAT double minors, and co-op placements are open to students in both schools. Bennett Library and SFU Recreation are part of campus life for FIC students too.

Later, you could work as a content strategist, game designer, advertising coordinator, web developer, communications officer or animator.
