Program overview
How do images, stories and technology work together to move an audience? FIC’s International Year One stream in Communication, Art and Technology lets you explore that question in Burnaby, on the SFU campus, through Integrated Entry. The Integrated route folds English development into your first term, and the full programme is still set out over three terms, roughly twelve months.
In term one you take INTG100 Academic English, a non-credit course covering academic reading, persuasive essay writing, group speaking and active listening, together with ILS101 and two academic courses. Later terms bring the core of the stream: CMNS120 Creativity and Communication Across Media, CMNS130 Communication and Social Change, IAT110 Visual Communication Design and IAT102. Students heading towards Interactive Arts and Technology add a quantitative course, for example CMPT120 or MACM101 Discrete Mathematics I.
SFU designs the curriculum and approves the teaching staff, which is why completed credits carry straight into an SFU degree. Transfer to second year depends on finishing ten academic courses and meeting the programme GPA: 2.50 for Communication and the FCAT double minors, 2.60 for Interactive Arts and Technology. Degree options include a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Interactive Arts and Technology, and co-op work terms are available once you are at SFU.
Career paths after the degree include advertising account coordinator, UX/UI designer, journalist, game designer, marketing communications officer and content producer. Integrated Entry is a sensible choice if your English is close to, but not yet at, the direct entry standard and you would rather build language skills while earning credit than delay your studies.
