Computing Science: International Year One (Direct Entry)

Ready to go straight into algorithms, calculus and code from your very first week? Direct Entry to International Year One (UTP Stage II) in Computing Science at Fraser International College (FIC) places you in full first-year computing courses on the SFU Burnaby campus without any preliminary English term. It takes three terms, so most students finish in about twelve months.

The required set is focused: CMPT115 Exploring Computer Science introduces the field, while CMPT120 and CMPT125 teach programming from first principles to data structures. MACM101 Discrete Mathematics I, MATH151 Calculus I and MATH152 Calculus II give you the mathematical base that later courses rely on. You also take one writing course, such as ENGL115 Literature and Culture or WL101 Writing in World Literature, at least three electives, and ILSA101 Integrated Learning Skills in your first term.

Everything you study at FIC is designed by SFU, and your instructors hold university approval. Classes are smaller, and you have access to SFU libraries, computer labs and health services. Finish 10 courses with at least 30 units, earn C- or better in each, and a GPA of 2.67 secures your move into year two of the SFU Bachelor of Science (Computer Science). Co-op placements are open to you once you are an SFU student.

With this degree you can aim for work as a software developer, database administrator, web developer, systems analyst or data analyst. Direct Entry suits students who already meet the full English standard and have a solid maths record from Class 12, and who want the quickest route into a second-year computing timetable at SFU.
