Computing Science: International Year One (ELC Pathway Entry)

Strong at maths but not yet at the English level FIC asks for? Your path into computing can begin with language study. ELC Entry to the UTP Stage II (International Year One) Computing Science stream starts with a 16-week, full-time programme at SFU English Language and Culture, followed by three Fraser International College (FIC) terms on the Burnaby campus of SFU, around sixteen months overall.

In the English Language Course stage you build academic reading, writing, listening and speaking, and in its second term you sit the FIC Language Assessment Test. Once you progress, the computing year begins: CMPT120, the first programming course, leads into CMPT125, supported by MACM101 Discrete Mathematics I and two calculus courses, MATH151 and MATH152. CMPT115 Exploring Computer Science gives a wider view of the discipline, and a writing course rounds out the year.

At FIC your courses are designed by SFU and taught by instructors the university approves, in classes smaller than a typical first-year lecture. You also use SFU facilities, including libraries and computer labs. To enter the School of Computing Science you need a 2.67 GPA over 10 courses, with no grade below C-. The SFU computing science degree then continues from its second year, and SFU co-op is available.

Likely roles after graduation include software developer, cybersecurity analyst, database administrator, web developer and data analyst. ELC Entry is right for applicants with a good Class 12 maths result whose English level needs a full term of focused work before university study, and who want a guaranteed next step once that stage is complete.
