Computing Science: International Year One (Integrated Entry)

What if you could start university-level programming now, with English support built into the same timetable? That is the idea behind Computing Science International Year One, UTP Stage II, with Integrated Entry, offered by Fraser International College (FIC) and located on the Burnaby campus of Simon Fraser University. The route is completed in three terms, about one year of full-time study.

During term one you take INTG100, the integrated English course, alongside only two academic subjects, so reading and writing practice runs next to real computing content. Across the next two terms you work through CMPT120 and CMPT125, the two-part Introduction to Computing Science and Programming sequence, together with MATH151 Calculus I, MATH152 Calculus II and MACM101 Discrete Mathematics I. A writing course such as ENGL112 Literature Now or PSYC109 Brain, Mind and Society completes the requirements, with electives filling the rest.

Courses follow SFU outlines and are led by university-approved instructors in smaller groups. Transfer is guaranteed once you finish 10 courses worth 30 units with a 2.67 GPA and C- or higher throughout; SFU itself asks for a cumulative 2.5. You then join second year of the Bachelor of Science (Computer Science), where co-operative education lets you alternate study terms with paid work.

Careers after this degree include web developer, software developer, data analyst, systems analyst and cybersecurity analyst in firms across British Columbia and beyond. Integrated Entry fits applicants who are comfortable with maths and logic, sit a step below the direct English standard, and prefer to keep moving towards their degree instead of spending a separate term on language study.
