Engineering Science: International Year One (Cornerstone Entry)

Building robots, medical devices or clean energy systems starts with a demanding first year of maths, physics and programming. With Cornerstone Entry, International Year One (UTP Stage II): Engineering Science at FIC opens with one support term before that technical year begins, all on the SFU campus in Burnaby. Expect four terms in total from your first day to transfer.

That opening term covers three non-credit courses, CNQS101 Cornerstone Quantitative Survey, CNST101 and CNSU101, which prepare you for technical study, academic writing and life at a Canadian university. The engineering year then brings CMPT130 Introduction to Computer Programming I, MATH151 Calculus I, MATH232 Applied Linear Algebra, PHYS140 Studio Physics and ENSC100 Engineering, Science and Society, along with a breadth elective in the humanities or social sciences. Mechatronics-bound students replace ENSC180 with CHEM121 General Chemistry and Laboratory I.

SFU designs the courses and approves the instructors, so FIC grades carry straight into your degree record. A cumulative 2.67 GPA over ten courses, with no grade under C-, guarantees a seat in SFU’s School of Engineering Science, in Mechatronic Systems Engineering or in Sustainable Energy Engineering. Every SFU engineering degree includes three co-op terms of full-time, paid work experience.

Graduates work as electronics engineer, robotics engineer, biomedical engineering technologist, embedded software developer, telecommunications engineer or energy systems analyst. Cornerstone Entry fits capable maths students whose English is currently under the Integrated requirement and who want a gentler first term before facing one of FIC’s heaviest technical timetables. It also gives you time to adjust to Canadian teaching styles.
