Engineering Science: International Year One (Direct Entry)

Engineering at Simon Fraser University starts here. Direct Entry to International Year One (UTP Stage II) in Engineering Science places you in a complete first-year engineering timetable from day one, taught by FIC on SFU’s Burnaby campus. It is designed to be finished in three terms, with January, May and September starts.

Expect a heavy technical load: CMPT130 and CMPT135 in computer programming, MATH151 Calculus I, MATH152 Calculus II, MATH232 Applied Linear Algebra, PHYS140 and PHYS141 Studio Physics with the PHYS1141 lab, and ENSC100 Engineering, Science and Society. Students heading to Mechatronic Systems Engineering take CHEM121 General Chemistry and Laboratory I in place of ENSC180. In the first term you also complete a non-credit academic literacy course.

Every course is SFU-designed and taught by instructors SFU approves. You must hold a 2.40 CGPA after two terms to remain in the stream, and a cumulative 2.67 over ten courses with C- or better in each guarantees admission to the School of Engineering Science and its options: Biomedical, Computer, Electronics, Engineering Physics and Systems Engineering. Three full-time paid co-op terms are built into the SFU degree. Paid work terms let you test different engineering fields before graduating.

Typical roles include software engineer, biomedical engineer, microelectronics designer, robotics and controls engineer, telecommunications network engineer and manufacturing engineer. Direct Entry is intended for students who already satisfy FIC’s complete English requirement and have strong maths, including a Math Check score of at least 26 out of 30. If your Math Check result is lower, you would start in the Engineering Science Fundamentals Program instead.
