Environment (Bachelor of Arts): International Year One (Integrated Entry)

Climate, water and human settlement are among the defining issues of this century. The Integrated Entry route into FIC’s International Year One (UTP Stage II) in Environment (Arts) lets you study them at FIC, next to SFU in Burnaby, while English support runs alongside your first credit courses. It takes three terms, roughly a year, the same length as direct entry.

Term one sets INTG100, an English development course, next to ILS101 and a pair of credit subjects, perhaps GEOG100 on human geography or PHIL105 Critical Thinking. Later terms bring REM100 Global Change, GEOG104 Climate Change, Water, and Society, ARCH100 Ancient Peoples and Places and INDG101 Introduction to Indigenous Studies, plus a choice between EVSC100 and ARCH131. The mix blends physical and human perspectives, so you learn to read a landscape through science, history and culture at once.

Because SFU writes the course outlines and approves FIC instructors, your credits carry directly into the university. The transfer threshold is a 2.50 GPA across ten courses, each passed at C- or above. Meeting it places you in year two of an SFU Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Environment, with majors such as Human Geography or Archaeology, or joint majors linking Archaeology with Anthropology. Co-op placements are available through SFU’s environment co-op programme.

Career options include environmental consultant, land use planning technician, conservation programme assistant, climate policy analyst, cultural resource management technician and non-profit project coordinator. This entry type suits learners just short of the direct English level who would rather keep their degree on schedule than pause for a separate language course.
