Environment (Bachelor of Environment): International Year One (Cornerstone Entry)

If you want a career protecting land, water and communities, a slower start can still lead to the same degree. The Environment (Bachelor of Environment) pathway of International Year One, UTP Stage II, via Cornerstone at Fraser International College (FIC), located on SFU’s Burnaby campus, adds one support semester, making four terms or roughly sixteen months.

You begin with three Cornerstone courses: CNQS101 (Quantitative Survey), CNSU101 (University Life) and CNST101 (Academic Program). These strengthen academic habits and quantitative basics, and passing CNST101 removes the need for ILSA101. The environment year follows with REM100 Global Change, EVSC100 Introduction to Environmental Science, GEOG100 human geography and ARCH131 Human Origins, together with INDG101, STAT203 and GEOG104 on climate and water.

SFU writes the course outlines and approves each instructor, and FIC keeps classes smaller so you get more attention. You can use SFU libraries, labs and recreation facilities. A CGPA of 2.50 from 10 courses, each at C- or above, secures entry to the Faculty of Environment for second year of the Bachelor of Environment, where you can choose from three majors, among them Global Environmental Systems. Co-op work terms are offered through SFU.

Graduates find work as GIS specialists, environmental coordinators, waste management specialists, energy consultants and sustainability policy analysts. Cornerstone Entry is a good match for students whose English level is at the minimum accepted for UTP Stage II and who want an extra term of support before environmental science courses begin. It also gives time to get used to seminar discussion and written assignments.
