Environment (Bachelor of Environment): International Year One (Direct Entry)

Climate, water, land and people: this stream brings them together from your first term. Direct Entry into the Environment (Bachelor of Environment) stream of UTP Stage II, International Year One runs at Fraser International College (FIC) in Burnaby, on Simon Fraser University’s campus, and is completed in three terms, which is around one year of study. You start with full academic courses rather than a support term.

Required courses include EVSC100 Introduction to Environmental Science, REM100 Global Change and GEOG104 Climate Change, Water, and Society. GEOG100 Our World: Introducing Human Geography, ARCH131 Human Origins and INDG101 Introduction to Indigenous Studies add human and cultural perspectives, and STAT203 gives you statistics for social science. You also take one writing course, a social sciences elective such as PHIL105 Critical Thinking or POL141 International Relations, and ILSA101 in your first term.

The curriculum is designed by SFU, instructors are approved by the university, and small classes mean more direct help. You can use SFU libraries and recreation facilities while at FIC. With a CGPA of 2.50 over 10 courses and 30 units, and C- or better in every course, you are guaranteed entry to second year of the Bachelor of Environment. Majors include Resource and Environmental Management, Global Environmental Systems and Sustainable Business, and the Faculty of Environment offers co-op.

This degree prepares you for work as an environmental coordinator, sustainability policy analyst, GIS specialist, urban planner or energy consultant. Direct Entry suits students who meet the full English standard, care about sustainability, and want to be sitting in second-year SFU classes within twelve months of arriving.
