Environment (Bachelor of Environment): International Year One (ELC Pathway Entry)

A future in environmental work can begin with a focused English programme. ELC Entry for UTP Stage II Environment, leading to the Bachelor of Environment, opens with 16 weeks of full-time study run by SFU English Language and Culture. Next come three terms of first-year study at FIC (Fraser International College) in Burnaby, on SFU grounds, so the whole route lasts about sixteen months.

The English Language Course covers academic listening, speaking, reading and writing, and in its second term you take the FIC Language Assessment Test. After progressing, you start the environment courses: REM100 Global Change, EVSC100 environmental science, GEOG104 on climate and water, and GEOG100 human geography. ARCH131, INDG101 and STAT203 complete the required list, and a writing course such as ENGL113 is added.

At FIC you study SFU-designed courses with instructors approved by SFU, in classes kept small. University facilities such as libraries and recreation centres are open to you. Reaching a CGPA of 2.50 over 10 courses, with C- or better throughout, guarantees a place in the Faculty of Environment’s BEnv from second year. Majors include Sustainable Business and Resource and Environmental Management, and co-op is available at SFU. Many environment courses also involve fieldwork and group projects.

Graduates can work as sustainability policy analysts, urban planners, GIS specialists, environmental coordinators and energy consultants. ELC Entry is for students who meet FIC’s academic standard yet would benefit from sixteen weeks of language work before university courses, and who want a guaranteed next step into an environment degree once that stage is finished.
