Environment (Bachelor of Science): International Year One (Direct Entry)

Want to study the systems that keep the planet running, from climate to groundwater? Direct Entry to International Year One in Environment (BSc) puts you straight into credit science courses at FIC, beside SFU in Burnaby. The programme lasts three terms, one year, leading to second year of an SFU science degree.

Term one pairs MATH151 and CHEM121 with a biology course, BISC100 or BISC101. Term two brings MATH152 Calculus II, PHYS140 Studio Physics (Mechanics and Modern Physics) and EVSC100, and term three adds GEOG104 Climate Change, Water, and Society, a writing course and an elective such as CMPT120 or ARCH131. Direct entrants also take ILS101 Integrated Learning Skills and the Academic Literacy Course, ALC101, when they start, unless exempted. Laboratory sessions in chemistry and studio physics give you hands-on practice from the first term.

The curriculum is SFU’s own, and FIC instructors are approved by the university, so lectures and labs match what first-year SFU students meet. You also have access to Bennett Library, SFU Recreation and other campus services. A GPA of 2.5 across 30 or more units, with no course graded below C-, guarantees entry to the Faculty of Environment and its Bachelor of Science programmes in Environmental Science, Geographic Information Systems and Physical Geography. Co-op is available through the faculty. When lab reports get demanding, the Student Learning Commons offers help with research and writing.

Graduates find work as water quality inspectors, environmental protection officers, air quality specialists, ecologists, laboratory technicians and natural resources specialists. Direct Entry is for students who already meet the full English standard and have strong Grade 12 maths, chemistry and physics.
