Environment (Bachelor of Science): International Year One (Integrated Entry)

Climate change, clean water and healthy ecosystems all need scientists who can read the data. FIC’s Environment (BSc) stream of International Year One gives you that start on SFU’s Burnaby campus, and Integrated Entry adds English development to your first term. The programme is designed to be completed in three terms, around twelve months.

Integrated students begin with INTG100 Academic English, which practises academic reading, persuasive writing and speaking in groups, plus ILS101 and two academic courses. The science sequence includes MATH151 Calculus I and MATH152 Calculus II, CHEM121 General Chemistry and Laboratory I, PHYS140 Studio Physics and EVSC100 Introduction to Environmental Science. In the final term you study GEOG104 Climate Change, Water, and Society with a writing course such as ENGL113. Before calculus and chemistry gather pace, INTG100 practice in paragraph structure and group discussion prepares you for seminars and lab work.

SFU designed each course and approves each instructor, and FIC students draw on SFU resources such as Bennett Library and the Student Learning Commons. Complete at least 30 units with an overall GPA of 2.5 and grades of C- or better, and admission to SFU’s Faculty of Environment is guaranteed. From there you can pursue a BSc in Environmental Science, a BSc in Geographic Information Systems or a BSc in Physical Geography, and the faculty offers co-op work terms.

With the degree, graduates work as environmental protection officers, ecologists, water quality inspectors, air quality specialists, field technicians and natural resources specialists. Integrated Entry suits science-minded students with strong maths who need a little more English practice before handling laboratory reports and research writing on their own.
