Health Sciences (Bachelor of Arts): International Year One (Direct Entry)

You can start a health sciences degree in Canada with a full first-year timetable from day one. Direct Entry into UTP Stage II Health Sciences (BA), part of International Year One at Fraser International College (FIC), is taught on Simon Fraser University’s Burnaby campus and takes three terms, about twelve months, before you transfer.

You study the same first-year subjects SFU students take. HSCI160 Global Perspectives on Health looks at disease and wellbeing worldwide, BISC100 Introduction to Biology covers living systems, and STAT203 Introduction to Statistics for the Social Sciences teaches you to read data. One course from CMNS110, CMNS130 or POL100, one from BPK140, INDG101 or PSYC100, a writing course and four electives complete the plan. In your first term you also take ILSA101 Integrated Learning Skills to sharpen study habits.

SFU designs every course and approves the people who teach them, and FIC classes are smaller than most university lectures. You can use SFU libraries, computer labs and recreation centres throughout the year. A 2.50 GPA from 10 courses, each passed at C- or higher, guarantees entry to the Faculty of Health Sciences for year two of the Health Sciences BA. SFU co-op is also open to health sciences students.

Possible careers include environmental health officer, health educator, public health inspector, community outreach specialist and rehabilitation worker. Direct Entry works best for applicants whose English already satisfies the direct requirement, who have around 60% or more in Class 12, and want to reach second year at SFU in the shortest time.
