Program overview
Interested in public health but want to strengthen your English first? ELC Entry for the Health Sciences (BA) stream, International Year One (UTP Stage II) begins with a 16-week, full-time course at SFU English Language and Culture, then moves on to three terms at Fraser International College (FIC), which sits on the SFU campus in Burnaby. Expect around sixteen months in total.
The English Language Course develops the academic skills you need for lectures, reading and essays, and you take the FIC Language Assessment Test during its second term. After progressing, you begin the health year with BISC100 Introduction to Biology and HSCI160 Global Perspectives on Health, then STAT203 statistics. Choices such as CMNS130 Communication and Social Change and BPK140 Contemporary Health Issues add breadth, while a writing course like WL101 builds essay skills.
FIC teaches courses that SFU has designed, through instructors it has approved, and classes stay small. You have access to SFU facilities such as libraries and health services. Completing 10 courses with a GPA of 2.50 and at least C- in all of them guarantees your place in the Faculty of Health Sciences, and your Bachelor of Arts in Health Sciences continues from second year there. Co-op is available at SFU.
Graduates go on to become health services administrators, health educators, environmental health officers, community outreach specialists or pharmaceutical sales representatives. ELC Entry is for students who have the academic marks for FIC but need a full term of English study first, and who want a clear route into SFU after that stage.

Admission requirements
Admission requirements:
- Education: Class 12 with a 60% average in 4 academic subjects.
- English: Below FIC entry level: start with SFU’s 16 week English course and move on with IELTS 5.0 (no band below 4.5) or FIC’s own test.
- Transfer to SFU year 2: CGPA 2.50, C- or better in all courses.
- PGWP: Not for the FIC year alone; the SFU degree you finish leads to one of up to 3 years.
- Before you apply: Year one fee covers 30 SFU-transferable credits. The ELC English course is charged separately by SFU. BC PAL required.
