Program overview
Health care, research and public policy all need people who understand both biology and population data. Through Direct Entry, Health Sciences (BSc) in International Year One (UTP Stage II) delivers that first year at FIC in three terms, with classes on the Burnaby campus shared with SFU. Intakes open in January, May and September.
You choose a track early. Life Sciences students take BISC101, CHEM121 General Chemistry and Laboratory I, MATH151 Calculus I and STAT203, while the Public Health and Data track swaps chemistry for a computing course such as CMPT120. Everyone studies HSCI160 Global Perspectives on Health and one writing course, and in term one you complete the Integrated Learning Skills course ILS101 and the Academic Literacy Course ALC101. You also pick four electives, which can explore psychology, geography or another area of interest.
Course content is designed by SFU and every FIC instructor is university-approved. Once you hold 10 courses and 30 units, all passed at C- or better, and a 2.50 cumulative GPA, you are guaranteed a seat in second-year Health Sciences at SFU, leading to the BSc with a Life Sciences or Public Health and Data concentration. Co-op placements are available through SFU. Health Sciences co-op at SFU combines paid terms with academic study.
Graduates go on to work as a medical laboratory technologist, health policy analyst, research coordinator, environmental health officer, health services administrator or health educator, and many continue to further study in health professions. Direct Entry suits students who meet FIC’s full English standard and hold Biology 12 with good maths results.

Admission requirements
Admission requirements:
- Education: Class 12 with a 60% average, Maths 65%, one science and Biology.
- English: IELTS 6.0 (6.0 in reading and writing, 5.5 in speaking and listening), TOEFL 78 (18 in reading and writing), PTE 58 (58 in each) or Duolingo 110.
- Transfer to SFU year 2: CGPA 2.50, C- or better in all courses.
- PGWP: Not for the FIC year alone; the SFU degree you finish leads to one of up to 3 years.
- Before you apply: Year one fee covers 30 SFU-transferable credits. BC PAL required.
