Program overview
Aiming for a science degree in health but still building your English? This route starts with SFU English Language and Culture’s full-time ELC-FIC Pathway, lasting 16 weeks, and then moves into the Health Sciences (BSc) option within FIC’s International Year One on the Burnaby campus, across three academic terms.
ELC teaching centres on conversation in small groups and practical English, and you take the FIC Language Assessment Test during the second ELC term. The academic year then covers BISC101 General Biology, HSCI160 Global Perspectives on Health and STAT203 statistics, with either CHEM121 chemistry for Life Sciences or CMPT120 or CMPT130 computing for Public Health and Data, plus calculus, a writing course and electives.
FIC courses are designed by SFU and led by instructors approved by the university. A cumulative GPA of 2.50 over ten courses and 30 units, with each grade at C- or higher, guarantees entry into year two of the Faculty of Health Sciences BSc at SFU. Co-op is offered to Health Sciences students at SFU. Choosing your track during the FIC year shapes whether you continue in Life Sciences or in Public Health and Data.
Future roles include public health inspector, laboratory research assistant, community health worker, health information analyst, radiology support technologist (with further training) and occupational health and safety officer. The ELC route suits students who need to raise their English before any FIC entry type becomes possible, and who want a clear, staged plan into health science. Biology 12 is also expected for this stream, so check your school results first.

Admission requirements
Admission requirements:
- Education: Class 12 with a 60% average, Maths 65%, one science and Biology.
- English: Below FIC entry level: start with SFU’s 16 week English course and move on with IELTS 5.0 (no band below 4.5) or FIC’s own test.
- Transfer to SFU year 2: CGPA 2.50, C- or better in all courses.
- PGWP: Not for the FIC year alone; the SFU degree you finish leads to one of up to 3 years.
- Before you apply: Year one fee covers 30 SFU-transferable credits. The ELC English course is charged separately by SFU. BC PAL required.
