Program overview
From actuarial science to molecular biology, SFU’s Bachelor of Science spans a wide range of majors, and International Year One (UTP Stage II): Science at FIC is your route into it. Studying on SFU’s Burnaby campus through Direct Entry, you complete the year in three terms, about twelve months, with intakes each January, May and September.
You follow one of four pathways. The Mathematics pathway covers CMPT130, CMPT135, MACM101, MATH151, MATH152 and MATH232; the Experimental Science pathway adds CHEM121, CHEM122 and CHEM126 to PHYS140 and PHYS141; the Life Science pathway includes BISC101 and BISC102; and General Science mixes programming, calculus and physics. Each pathway includes a writing course. Direct entrants also take ILS101 and a literacy course early on unless exempt.
Courses are designed by SFU and taught by instructors the university approves. You need a cumulative GPA of 2.75 over at least ten courses and 30 units, with C- or better in all pathway courses, to be admitted to year two of SFU’s Bachelor of Science. While at FIC you are welcome to use SFU Sci-Space resources and attend its events. SFU also runs a science co-op programme, which lets you test a career field through paid placements during the degree.
Science graduates work as laboratory technicians, data analysts, quality control chemists, actuarial analysts, research assistants and geoscience technicians. Direct Entry suits students with strong Grade 12 Maths and science results who already meet FIC’s standard English level. Admission from India normally expects a 75% average, with Maths at 75% and two sciences.

Admission requirements
Admission requirements:
- Education: Class 12 with a 75% average, Maths 75% and two sciences.
- English: IELTS 6.0 (6.0 in reading and writing, 5.5 in speaking and listening), TOEFL 78 (18 in reading and writing), PTE 58 (58 in each) or Duolingo 110.
- Transfer to SFU year 2: CGPA 2.75, C- or better in all courses.
- PGWP: Not for the FIC year alone; the SFU degree you finish leads to one of up to 3 years.
- Before you apply: Year one fee covers 30 SFU-transferable credits. BC PAL required.
