Program overview

The Protection, Security and Investigation diploma is a two-year program covering private security, corporate protection and investigative work.

Coursework covers security law and the Private Security and Investigative Services Act, physical security systems and access control, risk and threat assessment, loss prevention and retail investigation, investigative techniques and evidence handling, surveillance methods, report writing and testimony, emergency and crisis management, cybersecurity awareness, conflict de-escalation, and ethics in private security. Ontario security licensing preparation is built in.

The private security sector is considerably larger than public policing in employment terms, and corporate security, loss prevention and investigations are professional career tracks rather than entry-level guarding. Risk assessment is the content that moves graduates into those roles.

Humber Polytechnic — formerly Humber College — is Ontario’s largest public college and a Designated Learning Institution (DLI O19376943122). The Lakeshore campus sits on the shore of Lake Ontario in south Etobicoke, next to Colonel Samuel Smith Park, and is home to Humber’s business degrees, media and creative arts, and social and community services programs. Heritage buildings, a residence opened in 2024 and a free shuttle to the North campus make it the most distinctive of Humber’s sites.

Its field maps to CIP 43.0109 (Security and loss prevention services). Important: this is a college credential rather than a degree, so it is not exempt from the November 2024 PGWP field-of-study restriction — eligibility depends on this CIP field appearing on IRCC’s eligible list when you apply. Humber publishes a PGWP-eligible program list with CIP codes; check it, and confirm with an Apply Study Visa counsellor before committing. IRCC makes the final decision.

Admission requirements

Who can apply (guide for international students):

  • Education: Completed Class 12 (10+2) or equivalent with a minimum 50% overall.
  • Subject requirements: Grade 12 English.
  • IELTS: Overall 6.0, no band below 5.5
  • TOEFL iBT: Total 80
  • PTE Academic: Overall 53
  • Duolingo: 105
  • GRE/GMAT: Not required.

Application fee $100 CAD, plus an initial tuition deposit of $2,000 CAD — Humber will not request your Ontario Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) until that deposit clears, so deposit timing drives your study-permit timeline. Admissions run on a rolling basis and popular programs fill months ahead under Canada’s international seat caps. Ask an Apply Study Visa counsellor to confirm current fees, seats and PGWP status before applying.

Career opportunities

Private security and corporate protection employ more people than public policing:

  • Security Supervisor — corporate and institutional sites
  • Loss Prevention Officer — retail investigation
  • Corporate Security Officer — in-house security teams
  • Private Investigator — with Ontario licensing
  • Risk and Threat Analyst — corporate risk functions
  • Security Systems Coordinator — access control and surveillance
  • Security Manager — with experience

Ontario security and investigator licensing is required for most roles — the program prepares for it.
