Advanced College Diploma - Architectural Technology

The Architectural Technology advanced diploma is a three-year program producing the technologists who turn architectural concepts into buildable construction documents.

Students work through architectural drawing and drafting conventions, building construction methods and assemblies, structural principles and systems, the Ontario Building Code and barrier-free design requirements, building science covering thermal performance, air and moisture management, mechanical and electrical systems coordination, materials and specification writing, computer-aided design and building information modelling, site planning and zoning, construction estimating, and contract administration. Studio projects progress from small residential work to complex multi-storey buildings with complete document sets.

The distinction from architecture is one of role rather than ability. Architects design and hold professional liability; architectural technologists produce the technical documentation, resolve detailing, coordinate consultants and manage code compliance — work that architecture firms cannot operate without and that carries a shorter, cheaper route to employment.

Humber Polytechnic — formerly Humber College — is Ontario’s largest public college and a Designated Learning Institution (DLI O19376943122). The North campus in Etobicoke is its main site, running technology, engineering, health science, business and skilled trades programs in purpose-built labs and shops rather than lecture halls, with three intakes a year and the deepest employer network in the Greater Toronto Area.

Its field maps to CIP 04.0901 (Architectural technology). Important: this is a college credential rather than a degree, so it is not exempt from the November 2024 PGWP field-of-study restriction — eligibility depends on this CIP field appearing on IRCC’s eligible list when you apply. Humber publishes a PGWP-eligible program list with CIP codes; check it, and confirm with an Apply Study Visa counsellor before committing. IRCC makes the final decision.
