Program overview
The Architectural Technology – Sustainable Design advanced diploma is the three-year architectural technology program with building performance and low-carbon design built into its core rather than added as electives.
Alongside the standard technical foundation — drafting, construction assemblies, structures, building code, BIM, specifications and contract administration — students cover building energy modelling and simulation, passive design strategies and solar orientation, high-performance envelope design and thermal bridging analysis, renewable energy integration, green building rating systems including LEED and Passive House principles, life cycle assessment and embodied carbon, water conservation systems, and healthy materials selection.
Note the higher admission bar: 70% overall with three subjects individually above 70%, against 50% for most Humber diplomas. The higher fee and entry standard reflect a genuine market position — Ontario building codes and municipal green standards are tightening steadily, and technologists who can model and document energy performance are considerably scarcer than those who can only draft.
Humber Polytechnic — formerly Humber College — is Ontario’s largest public college and a Designated Learning Institution (DLI O19376943122). The North campus in Etobicoke is its main site, running technology, engineering, health science, business and skilled trades programs in purpose-built labs and shops rather than lecture halls, with three intakes a year and the deepest employer network in the Greater Toronto Area.
Its field maps to CIP 04.0902 (Architectural and building sciences). Important: this is a college credential rather than a degree, so it is not exempt from the November 2024 PGWP field-of-study restriction — eligibility depends on this CIP field appearing on IRCC’s eligible list when you apply. Humber publishes a PGWP-eligible program list with CIP codes; check it, and confirm with an Apply Study Visa counsellor before committing. IRCC makes the final decision.

Admission requirements
Who can apply (guide for international students):
- Education: Completed Class 12 (10+2) or equivalent with a minimum 70% overall, with at least three subjects individually above 70%.
- Subject requirements: Grade 12 English, Grade 12 Mathematics and two other Grade 12 courses.
- Program-specific: This program is offered in a hybrid format — students taking online courses must be full-time and physically present in Canada.
- IELTS: Overall 6.0, no band below 5.5
- TOEFL iBT: Total 80
- PTE Academic: Overall 53
- Duolingo: 105
- GRE/GMAT: Not required.
Application fee $100 CAD, plus an initial tuition deposit of $2,000 CAD — Humber will not request your Ontario Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) until that deposit clears, so deposit timing drives your study-permit timeline. Admissions run on a rolling basis and popular programs fill months ahead under Canada’s international seat caps. Ask an Apply Study Visa counsellor to confirm current fees, seats and PGWP status before applying.

Career opportunities
Building performance requirements are creating a distinct hiring category:
- Sustainable Design Technologist — architecture and consulting firms
- Energy Modeller — building performance simulation
- Building Performance Analyst — retrofit and new build assessment
- LEED / Green Building Coordinator — certification documentation
- Architectural Technologist — general practice roles
- Building Envelope Specialist — envelope design and assessment
- Sustainability Consultant — with experience
Toronto’s Green Standard and Ontario’s building code trajectory both push demand toward performance-literate technologists.
