Program overview
The Computer Engineering Technology advanced diploma is a three-year program sitting between hardware and software, with an optional co-op.
Content covers digital logic and computer architecture, programming in C and C++ alongside higher-level languages, microprocessor and microcontroller systems, embedded systems design and real-time programming, operating systems internals, computer networking and protocols, interfacing and peripheral design, hardware description languages and FPGA work, network and device security, and a capstone integrating hardware and software into a working system.
The hardware-software boundary is the most useful place to sit in this field. Pure programmers cannot debug at the device level; pure hardware technicians cannot write the firmware. Graduates who work across both are the ones organisations struggle to replace, and the ones who move into systems and architecture roles fastest.
The optional co-op stream is worth taking if you are offered it: paid Canadian work experience before graduation improves both hiring outcomes and Express Entry points, and co-op students frequently convert their placement into a full-time offer.
Humber Polytechnic — formerly Humber College — is Ontario’s largest public college and a Designated Learning Institution (DLI O19376943122). The North campus in Etobicoke is its main site, running technology, engineering, health science, business and skilled trades programs in purpose-built labs and shops rather than lecture halls, with three intakes a year and the deepest employer network in the Greater Toronto Area.

Application fee $100 CAD, plus an initial tuition deposit of $2,000 CAD — Humber will not request your Ontario Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) until that deposit clears, so deposit timing drives your study-permit timeline.
