Program overview
The Computer Programming and Analysis advanced diploma is the three-year version of Humber’s software development stream, adding systems analysis and enterprise-scale work to the programming core, with an optional co-op.
The first two years cover programming fundamentals, object-oriented development, data structures, database design and SQL, and web development. The third year is what justifies the extra time: systems analysis and design, enterprise application architecture, advanced database and data modelling, cloud deployment and DevOps fundamentals, software project management, security in application development, and a substantial team capstone delivered to a real client.
The analysis component is the career differentiator. Developers who can only code compete on rates; developers who can also gather requirements, model a system and communicate with stakeholders move into senior and lead positions. The longer program also supports a longer PGWP where the field is eligible.
The optional co-op stream is worth taking if you are offered it: paid Canadian work experience before graduation improves both hiring outcomes and Express Entry points, and co-op students frequently convert their placement into a full-time offer.
Humber Polytechnic — formerly Humber College — is Ontario’s largest public college and a Designated Learning Institution (DLI O19376943122). The North campus in Etobicoke is its main site, running technology, engineering, health science, business and skilled trades programs in purpose-built labs and shops rather than lecture halls, with three intakes a year and the deepest employer network in the Greater Toronto Area.
Its field maps to CIP 11.0201 (Computer programming). Important: this is a college credential rather than a degree, so it is not exempt from the November 2024 PGWP field-of-study restriction — eligibility depends on this CIP field appearing on IRCC’s eligible list when you apply. Humber publishes a PGWP-eligible program list with CIP codes; check it, and confirm with an Apply Study Visa counsellor before committing. IRCC makes the final decision.
