Program overview

The Bachelor of Computer Science – Cybersecurity is a four-year honours degree with a work placement, combining a full computer science foundation with security specialisation.

The computer science core covers programming and object-oriented design, data structures and algorithms, computer architecture and operating systems, database systems, networking, discrete mathematics and statistics, and software engineering. The security specialisation layers on cryptography, network and infrastructure security, application and secure code development, ethical hacking and penetration testing, digital forensics and incident response, security operations and monitoring, risk management and governance frameworks, and cloud security.

Two structural advantages for international students. Cybersecurity has a documented skills shortage across Canadian financial services, government and healthcare, so demand is real rather than speculative. And as a degree, this program is exempt from the PGWP field-of-study restriction that applies to Humber’s diplomas and graduate certificates — which makes it a structurally safer immigration pathway than a shorter security credential.

The work placement is a graded part of the program, so you finish with documented Canadian experience and a referee rather than only a transcript.

Humber Polytechnic — formerly Humber College — is Ontario’s largest public college and a Designated Learning Institution (DLI O19376943122). The North campus in Etobicoke is its main site, running technology, engineering, health science, business and skilled trades programs in purpose-built labs and shops rather than lecture halls, with three intakes a year and the deepest employer network in the Greater Toronto Area.

Its field maps to CIP 11.1003 (Computer and information systems security). Because this is a degree, graduates are exempt from the November 2024 PGWP field-of-study restriction that applies to college credentials. Full-time on-campus study and graduation remain the conditions, and IRCC makes the final decision.

Admission requirements

Who can apply (guide for international students):

  • Education: Completed Class 12 (10+2) or equivalent with a minimum 65% overall.
  • Subject requirements: Grade 12 English and Grade 12 Mathematics (Advanced Functions or equivalent) at 65% or higher.
  • IELTS: Overall 6.5, no band below 6.0
  • TOEFL iBT: Total 84
  • PTE Academic: Overall 58
  • Duolingo: 115
  • GRE/GMAT: Not required.

Application fee $100 CAD, plus an initial tuition deposit of $2,000 CAD — Humber will not request your Ontario Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) until that deposit clears, so deposit timing drives your study-permit timeline. Admissions run on a rolling basis and popular programs fill months ahead under Canada’s international seat caps. Ask an Apply Study Visa counsellor to confirm current fees, seats and PGWP status before applying.

Career opportunities

Cybersecurity is among the most under-supplied technical fields in Canada:

  • Security Analyst — security operations centres
  • Penetration Tester — offensive security and consulting
  • Incident Response Analyst — breach detection and response
  • Security Engineer — infrastructure and application hardening
  • Governance, Risk and Compliance Analyst — the policy-facing route
  • Digital Forensics Analyst — investigation and evidence work
  • Cloud Security Specialist — the fastest-growing niche

Toronto’s banks operate some of the largest security teams in the country and recruit heavily from local degrees.
