Program overview
The Bachelor of Design (Honours) – User Experience is a four-year degree with a work placement, covering digital product design in far greater depth than a one-year certificate allows.
The program builds from design fundamentals — typography, colour, composition, visual systems — into user research methodology, information architecture, interaction design, prototyping and design systems, usability testing and evaluation, accessibility and inclusive design, service design and journey mapping, content design, front-end implementation fundamentals, design strategy and business context, and design ethics. Upper years run studio projects with industry partners and a substantial capstone.
The depth difference is research and strategy. Short UX programs teach the tools and produce competent executors; a four-year degree produces designers who can frame a problem, justify a direction against business objectives and lead a design process. That is the difference between a UX designer and a design lead. As a degree, it also sits outside the PGWP field-of-study restriction.
The work placement is a graded part of the program, so you finish with documented Canadian experience and a referee rather than only a transcript.
Humber Polytechnic — formerly Humber College — is Ontario’s largest public college and a Designated Learning Institution (DLI O19376943122). The North campus in Etobicoke is its main site, running technology, engineering, health science, business and skilled trades programs in purpose-built labs and shops rather than lecture halls, with three intakes a year and the deepest employer network in the Greater Toronto Area.
Its field maps to CIP 50.0409 (Graphic and interaction design). Because this is a degree, graduates are exempt from the November 2024 PGWP field-of-study restriction that applies to college credentials. Full-time on-campus study and graduation remain the conditions, and IRCC makes the final decision.

Admission requirements
Who can apply (guide for international students):
- Education: Completed Class 12 (10+2) or equivalent with a minimum 65% overall.
- Subject requirements: Grade 12 English at 65% or higher.
- IELTS: Overall 6.5, no band below 6.0
- TOEFL iBT: Total 84
- PTE Academic: Overall 58
- Duolingo: 115
- GRE/GMAT: Not required.
Application fee $100 CAD, plus an initial tuition deposit of $2,000 CAD — Humber will not request your Ontario Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) until that deposit clears, so deposit timing drives your study-permit timeline. Admissions run on a rolling basis and popular programs fill months ahead under Canada’s international seat caps. Ask an Apply Study Visa counsellor to confirm current fees, seats and PGWP status before applying.

Career opportunities
Digital product design is among the most consistent tech hiring categories in Toronto:
- UX Designer — product and digital teams
- Product Designer — end-to-end feature ownership
- UX Researcher — research-led design roles
- Service Designer — end-to-end experience design
- Design Systems Designer — component and pattern ownership
- Design Lead — the destination the degree depth supports
- Design Strategist — business-facing design roles
Four years of studio critique and research training is what separates design leads from design executors.
