Program overview

The Business – Accounting diploma is a two-year program that trains students to do accounting work rather than only understand it.

The sequence moves from introductory financial accounting through intermediate financial reporting, managerial and cost accounting, taxation for individuals and small business, auditing fundamentals, and accounting information systems. Software fluency is treated as core, not optional — students work extensively in spreadsheets and in the accounting packages Canadian small and mid-sized firms actually run. Supporting courses in business law, economics, statistics and communication round out the credential.

Accounting has a structural advantage over most diplomas: every organisation needs it, the work is verifiable, and the skills transfer between industries. The program also feeds Humber’s Advanced Diploma and Bachelor of Commerce – Accounting, which is the route toward CPA prerequisite coverage.

The work placement is a graded part of the program, so you finish with documented Canadian experience and a referee rather than only a transcript.

Humber Polytechnic — formerly Humber College — is Ontario’s largest public college and a Designated Learning Institution (DLI O19376943122). The North campus in Etobicoke is its main site, running technology, engineering, health science, business and skilled trades programs in purpose-built labs and shops rather than lecture halls, with three intakes a year and the deepest employer network in the Greater Toronto Area.

Its field maps to CIP 52.0301 (Accounting). Important: this is a college credential rather than a degree, so it is not exempt from the November 2024 PGWP field-of-study restriction — eligibility depends on this CIP field appearing on IRCC’s eligible list when you apply. Humber publishes a PGWP-eligible program list with CIP codes; check it, and confirm with an Apply Study Visa counsellor before committing. IRCC makes the final decision.

Admission requirements

Who can apply (guide for international students):

  • Education: Completed Class 12 (10+2) or equivalent with a minimum 50% overall.
  • Subject requirements: Grade 12 English and Grade 12 Mathematics.
  • IELTS: Overall 6.0, no band below 5.5
  • TOEFL iBT: Total 80
  • PTE Academic: Overall 53
  • Duolingo: 105
  • GRE/GMAT: Not required.

Application fee $100 CAD, plus an initial tuition deposit of $2,000 CAD — Humber will not request your Ontario Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) until that deposit clears, so deposit timing drives your study-permit timeline. Admissions run on a rolling basis and popular programs fill months ahead under Canada’s international seat caps. Ask an Apply Study Visa counsellor to confirm current fees, seats and PGWP status before applying.

Career opportunities

Accounting roles hire consistently through economic cycles:

  • Accounting Clerk / Assistant — the standard entry role
  • Accounts Payable and Receivable Officer — transactional finance teams
  • Bookkeeper — small business and outsourced practice
  • Payroll Administrator — a specialism in constant demand
  • Junior Accountant — with experience or further credentials
  • Tax Preparation Assistant — seasonal and firm-based work
  • Pathway to CPA — via the advanced diploma and degree route

The CPA designation requires degree-level study — treat this diploma as step one, not the destination.
