College Diploma - Hearing Instrument Specialist

The Hearing Instrument Specialist diploma is a two-year program in hearing assessment and hearing aid fitting, and at $13,134 the lowest-priced health credential at the North campus.

Coursework covers anatomy and physiology of the auditory system, acoustics and psychoacoustics, audiometric testing and hearing assessment technique, hearing aid technology and signal processing, earmold impression taking and modification, hearing aid selection, fitting and real-ear verification, counselling clients and families through hearing loss, tinnitus management, assistive listening devices, and the business and regulatory aspects of hearing clinic practice.

The demographic case here is unusually clear. Canada’s population is ageing, age-related hearing loss is extremely common and under-treated, and hearing clinics operate as a growing private-sector market. The counselling component matters as much as the technical fitting — hearing aid abandonment is driven largely by poor client support rather than device failure.

This is a regulated health profession in Ontario. Graduating from the program is not the same as being licensed to practise: registration with the relevant Ontario college and a certification examination follow graduation. Confirm the current registration pathway for internationally educated applicants before you apply.
