Graduate Certificate - Journalism

The Journalism graduate certificate compresses professional reporting training into one intensive year with a placement, for students who already hold a diploma or degree.

Because students arrive with subject knowledge, the program concentrates on craft: news writing and story structure, interviewing and source development, research and fact verification, media law and ethics, multiplatform production across audio, video and text, data journalism, digital publishing and audience analytics, and a professional portfolio built through newsroom production. The placement puts students in working media organisations.

The one-year format suits a specific candidate: someone with a degree in economics, science, politics or another field who wants to report on it. Specialist knowledge plus journalistic craft is a stronger market position than general reporting skills alone, particularly in business, health and technology coverage.

The work placement is a graded part of the program, so you finish with documented Canadian experience and a referee rather than only a transcript.

Humber Polytechnic — formerly Humber College — is Ontario’s largest public college and a Designated Learning Institution (DLI O19376943122). The North campus in Etobicoke is its main site, running technology, engineering, health science, business and skilled trades programs in purpose-built labs and shops rather than lecture halls, with three intakes a year and the deepest employer network in the Greater Toronto Area.

Important: this is a college credential rather than a degree, so it is not exempt from the November 2024 PGWP field-of-study restriction — eligibility depends on this CIP field appearing on IRCC’s eligible list when you apply.
