Program overview
Every farm expansion, land purchase and handover to the next generation starts with a set of numbers and a conversation with a lender. Lakeland’s Agribusiness diploma, a two-year programme at the Vermilion campus, offers a finance stream for students who want to be the person working through those numbers.
After an opening semester in common with the marketing and production streams, which includes Introduction to Agribusiness, finance students move into stream courses from semester two onward. Lakeland describes the finance stream as a focus on specific business and financial management practices and tools, aimed at three career areas: farm succession planning, agricultural lending and agricultural accounting. That means learning how farm businesses are measured, financed and transferred, with agriculture’s land, livestock and crop risks always in view.
Simulations and case competitions let finance students test lending and investment decisions without real money at stake, and integration with the Student-Managed Farm, Powered by New Holland, ties that financial thinking to a working farm on campus. In second year you pick either an agribusiness practicum or a business management and case analysis project, a natural fit for anyone wanting to build a complete financial case for an operation. Pathways include a second diploma in Animal Science Technology or Crop Technology in one more year, Lakeland’s Bachelor of Agriculture Technology, and 2+2 transfers such as the University of Alberta Agricultural/Food Business Management degree, the University of Lethbridge Bachelor of Management, the Olds College Bachelor of Applied Science in Agribusiness and Athabasca University business degrees.
Finance stream graduates work as agricultural lenders or loan officers, agricultural accountants, succession planning associates, farm account managers at credit unions and customer service representatives for agricultural insurers. The stream suits careful, numbers-minded students who want to help farm families make sound decisions about money, land and the future of their operation.
