Business Administration: General Business Major

Would you rather build broad business judgement than lock into one specialism at eighteen? Lakeland College’s Business Administration: General Business Major is a two-year, four-semester diploma taught face to face at the Lloydminster campus, and it gives you the widest choice of second-year courses of any Lakeland business major.

Year 1 is the shared Lakeland business foundation in accounting, economics, mathematics, communications and organisational behaviour. The General Business Major then stands out through choice: two business electives in year 1 and eight in year 2, planned with an academic advisor. Options include BA 130 Introduction to Management, BA 661 Human Resource Management, LA 180 Business Law, MA 201 Business Statistics, BA 640 Management Information Systems, AC 201 Payroll Administration and CU 105 Introduction to Computer Programming Language, so you can combine management, law, data and systems in one diploma.

General Business students can join Lakeland’s team in the annual deans of business case competition, where Alberta colleges solve a real business problem for a judging panel; Lakeland has placed in the top three five times since 2006. The diploma opens many degree routes: on-campus Athabasca University Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of Management study, plus block transfers to NAIT, Okanagan College, the University of Lethbridge, the University of Regina and the University of Saskatchewan.

Graduates of the General Business Major work as loan officers, business advisors, assistant managers, junior accountants, human resources coordinators and operations coordinators in financial institutions, small to multi-national businesses, non-profits and government. It suits students who want flexibility, like variety across business functions and may continue to a bachelor’s degree.
