Program overview
A four to twenty four month academic English programme with placement by level on arrival, covering academic reading and writing, listening and note taking, speaking and university study skills.
English as a Second Language is recorded at CAD 9,263 in tuition, but the application fee alone is CAD 1,025, the highest in our entire Canadian catalogue and nearly seven times NAIT’s standard fee.
English as a Second Language is taught at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton. Understand what English as a Second Language is before applying: it is a English language programme, not a credential, and it does NOT lead to a Post-Graduation Work Permit under any circumstances. You can hold a study permit while taking English as a Second Language and progress into a diploma or degree afterwards, and it is that credential which would carry work permit rights. An Alberta attestation letter is still required with the study permit application for English as a Second Language.
Applicants to English as a Second Language need Grade 12 or Class 12 with a minimum of 50 percent. The English requirement is no English test required, and tuition for English as a Second Language is recorded at CAD 9,263 a year with a CAD 1025 application fee. No scholarship is recorded against English as a Second Language. English as a Second Language lists seven entry windows across September, January and May. Apply Study Visa manages the English as a Second Language application, the deposit, the letter of acceptance and the Canadian study permit as one process.

Admission requirements
Who can apply (guide for international students):
- Education: Grade 12 or Class 12 at the percentage stated for this programme.
- English: No English test is required to enter this programme, because teaching English is what the programme itself does. Your level is assessed on arrival and you are placed accordingly.
- Application and deposit: An application fee of CAD 1025 applies. Confirm the tuition deposit and its refundability in writing before any money is transferred.
- Scholarship: No scholarship is recorded against this programme. Budget the full tuition.
- Work permit: English as a Second Language does NOT support a Post-Graduation Work Permit, because it is a English language programme rather than a credential and no study on English as a Second Language counts toward work permit eligibility. Treat English as a Second Language as a route into a diploma or degree and check the work permit position of that instead. No spousal open work permit arises, because that needs a master programme of 16 months or longer and NAIT awards none. An Alberta attestation letter is required with the study permit application.
- Study permit: Apply Study Visa handles the Alberta attestation letter, the study permit application and the biometrics appointment with you.

Career opportunities
Typical destinations for graduates:
- Entry to a NAIT Diploma: the intended destination
- Entry to a NAIT Degree: after reaching the required level
- Academic English Proficiency: for technical study
- Alternative to an IELTS Retake: building the skill rather than the score
- Canadian Classroom Experience: before a full course load
- Improved Employability: English for workplace settings
Reality check: English study never produces a Canadian work permit however long it runs, and at a CAD 1,025 application fee you should confirm exactly what the plan after it is before you pay.
