Which stories and events made the world you live in? Providence’s three-year Bachelor of Arts with a Humanities Major answers that question through two paired concentrations, English Literature and History, taught over six semesters at the Otterburne campus, a residential rural campus about 50 km south of Winnipeg. It is the shortest route to a Providence Humanities degree and suits students who want a focused, well-rounded arts education.

The degree asks for 18 credit hours in each concentration alongside Providence’s general BA requirements. Early literature courses such as ENGL 1020 Major English Writers II and ENGL 1030 Twentieth and Twenty-First Century Literature in English sit beside HIST 1010 A History of the Western World I: Ancient to Medieval and HIST 1040 History of Canada II. Later you can move into ENGL 2070 Studies in CS Lewis, ENGL 2660 Religious Themes Literature, HIST 2010 Medieval History and HIST 1050 History of Christianity I: Early Church to the Renaissance, while HUMN 1010 English Composition sharpens the analytical writing both subjects demand.

Humanities at Providence is coordinated by Luann Hiebert, Ph.D., who teaches English Literature, with Distinguished Professor Michael Gilmour, Ph.D., also teaching in the literature stream.
