Bachelor of Arts in Humanities, Advanced Major (4 Year)

Four years with Victorian novelists, Canadian writers and Canada’s past gives an argument time to mature. The Bachelor of Arts with a Humanities Advanced Major is Providence’s four-year, eight-semester version of its Humanities degree, delivered at the Otterburne campus, a residential rural campus about 50 km south of Winnipeg, with English Literature and History as the two concentrations studied side by side.

Your first years build the base: ENGL 1020 Major English Writers II, HUMN 1010 English Composition, HIST 1010 A History of the Western World I: Ancient to Medieval and HIST 1040 History of Canada II. The extra year of the Advanced Major leaves space to go further into senior literature, such as ENGL 3020 Victorian Literature and ENGL 3040 Canadian Literature, and into historical study through HIST 2010 Medieval History and HIST 2050 Selected Topics in History: Southeast Asia, 1500-Present. Across the degree the page highlights women writers and gender issues, religious themes in literature and women in history.

The Advanced Major keeps the double concentration structure of 18 credit hours in each subject but spreads your study across a full fourth year, giving a broader transcript than the three-year Major without the thesis the Honours route demands. Teaching is led by coordinator Luann Hiebert, Ph.D., and Michael Gilmour, Ph.D., and the page frames the work within a Christ-centred appreciation of human nature, values and the arts. The degree meets entrance requirements for the Faculty of Education at the University of Manitoba, University of Winnipeg and Brandon University.

This four-year Humanities route points towards teaching after a BEd, editing, journalism, archival work, public administration or graduate study. It fits a student who wants the full four-year credential and deeper coursework in literature and history, but who prefers extra courses to a supervised research project.
