Bachelor of Arts in Humanities, Honours (4 Year)

Imagine ending your degree with a thesis that is entirely your own research. The Bachelor of Arts with a Humanities Honours Major is Providence’s most demanding Humanities option: four years and eight semesters at the Otterburne campus, a residential rural campus about 50 km south of Winnipeg, combining English Literature and History and finishing with a supervised Honours project.

Coursework runs from ENGL 1030 Twentieth and Twenty-First Century Literature in English and HIST 1050 History of Christianity I: Early Church to the Renaissance through to ENGL 2070 Studies in CS Lewis and HIST 2010 Medieval History. Senior literature such as ENGL 3020 Victorian Literature and ENGL 3040 Canadian Literature develops close reading, while HUMN 1010 English Composition and history courses on western civilization and Canada train you to build and defend an argument from sources.

What sets the Honours Major apart is HUMN 4900 Honours Thesis/Seminar, a course listed for Honours Majors only, in which you shape a sustained research question drawing on your two concentrations of 18 credit hours each. Supervision comes from Humanities faculty such as coordinator Luann Hiebert, Ph.D., and Michael Gilmour, Ph.D., who teaches New Testament and English Literature. Honours graduates are best placed for graduate study in literature or history, and for roles such as researcher, historian, archivist, editor or teacher after a BEd.
