Cybersecurity

Every phishing email, unpatched server and suspicious login needs someone watching for it. RRC Polytech’s Cybersecurity programme is a two-year diploma that trains that person, and this version runs from Manitou a bi Bii daziigae, the Exchange District Campus building in downtown Winnipeg, with a January start. Over four terms you move from the foundations of IT into the daily work of a security operations team, finishing with a 15-week work-integrated learning term.

Year one builds the base. IT Foundations, Networking for Information Security, Customer Experience and Introduction to Security Operations sit alongside IT Service Management, IT Architecture and Design, Security Foundations and Vulnerability and Patch Management, while Communication Strategies and Communication for the Workplace sharpen how you report what you find. Year two moves into Security Monitoring, Detection and Response, Security Operations, IT Security Infrastructure and IT Service Delivery, and Communication for Systems and Innovative Thinking prepares you to explain cyber risk to managers and clients who are not technical.

Much of the downtown cohort’s learning happens in hands-on simulated environments where you practise spotting threats, patching vulnerabilities and responding to incidents. Term 4 is the WIL term: you either take a co-op placement with an employer or join an industry project in ACE Project Space, where RRC Polytech students work with local entrepreneurs on interdisciplinary teams. Because the programme leans on virtual labs, its laptop specifications are higher than for most RRC Polytech programmes, and a criminal record check is strongly recommended because security employers ask for one at onboarding.

Graduates of the Cybersecurity diploma are ready for entry-level posts such as security operations centre analyst, IT security analyst, vulnerability management technician, network security technician and IT service desk analyst. The Exchange District intake suits people who enjoy solving puzzles under pressure, like reading logs and network traffic for clues, and want a structured route from general IT into protecting organisations against attack.
