Electrical Trades

Every new home in Manitoba needs someone who can pull wire, box a panel and wire it to code. Electrical Trades is RRC Polytech’s one-year certificate for that work, with two weeks of work integrated learning in industry, and the South Winnipeg Campus is one of the two Winnipeg sites where it is taught.

The first term pairs Foundational Electrical Theory 1 with Residential Electrical Code 1 and Electrical Lab 1, so theory, code rules and wiring practice arrive together. Math for Construction Trades, Communication Strategies, Trade Safety and Orientation, WHMIS and General Safety Training complete the term. The second term steps up with Foundational Electrical Theory 2, Residential Electrical Code 2 and Electrical Lab 2, and Trade Documents teaches you to read the drawings and paperwork used on site, before the AC-165 Accreditation for Level 1 and a Field Placement.

The programme emphasises safety, electrical code and wiring practices for residential and commercial work, and the two Electrical Lab courses are where you practise installations yourself. After Term 2, students with a GPA of 2.0 or more spend two weeks with an approved industry partner, where professionals guide them through real safety, technical and communication tasks. Electrical Trades is accredited by Apprenticeship Manitoba; it is not an apprenticeship, but it may give credit towards one. Students bring their own tools, personal protective equipment and a laptop.

Graduates look for work as electrical apprentices, residential wiring helpers, commercial electrical helpers, electrical material handlers, service technician assistants and electrical estimating assistants. It suits practical, safety-minded people who are comfortable with maths and code books and want a structured first step towards a licensed electrician career.
